VICTORIAN 18CT SNAKE RING SET WITH OLD CUT DIAMOND AND RUBY EYES
When Prince Albert proposed to Queen Victoria with a snake ring in 1840 it became the most romantic motif of the era. Every woman wanted one. This is one of those — hallmarked Birmingham 1880, the hallmarks as crisp as the day they were struck, the condition quite extraordinary for a ring of this age.
The diamond is an original old mine cut, those large hand-cut facets giving a warmth and depth that modern stones do not have. The ruby eyes are small and vivid against the gold.
145 years old and it looks like it has barely been worn.
